Area 4, 5 and 6 on the
Real Estate Area Map.
These are the areas and towns in this zone: The two towns are
Matthews and Pineville. The three areas are the Arboretum, Ardrey, and
Stonecrest. Essentially you will find all of these areas and towns somewhere
between Hwy 74 (Independence Blvd-Matthews) through Hwy 521( South
Blvd-Pineville). Starting with Matthews, it works something like this: Matthews,
then the Arboretum, then Stonecrest, then Ardrey, then Ballantyne, and then
Pineville. That is a SE-S Charlotte sweep through the area!
Farther out Hwy 16 (Providence Road) at
N.C. 51(Matthews-Pineville Road) is the Arboretum, a massive shopping center with movie theaters,
restaurants, a supermarket, Barnes & Noble and The Gap among its attractions.
The Arboretum area has also become a center for service-oriented businesses such
as banks, insurance, real estate and medical offices.
Regarding the roads of SE Charlotte:
SE-S Charlotte is cradled between Hwy 51 and I-485 with exits dropping off every
couple of miles onto the main routes of Independence, Providence, Rea Rd,
Johnston Road and Pineville Matthews Rd. The new Lynx train line connects with
some new bus routes that include the Carolina Place Mall, Ballantyne, and Rea
Road. The line just opened November of 2007 and runs from South Blvd and I-485
with intermittent stops along the way, ending up at Seventh Street Station in
the center of Charlotte. There are park and ride lots located along the train
line for those that need their cars, once they return from a day uptown. The
line has been in planning since 1995 and will continue to have additions
made to it as time marches on.
One thing to note with Charlotte, is that the streets change names, without
ever making a turn, and some of the streets can have up to five names! If you
think you are lost because the street name is different then when you started
out, have faith, if you have not turned off of the original street, you are
probably still going the right direction! Carry a map:) and then memorize these
roads!
Rea Road
at Ballantyne Commons treats shoppers and diners to a variety of interests at
Stonecrest. This
center was developed to attract area soccer moms, and many
shops are child-focused. Pictured to the left is another new shopping
center for Ardrey area homes. It is just up the road two and a half miles
from Stonecrest. Both of these shopping centers offer live music for outside
diners, fountains, ice cream shops, and plenty of great shopping including
Target, Harris Teeter (are largest grocery store chain in the area) Marshalls,
and plenty of little unique boutiques.
The Ardrey shopping center not only serves the
Ardrey area, but also serves Union County residents who are just up the road
another mile or so!
Heading west on N.C. 51
toward Pineville, you pass a multitude of shopping centers including Carmel
Commons, Tower Place and McMullen Creek. As you pass under I-485, you’ll come to
the two-story Carolina Place Mall and The Centrum, a shopping center that
includes Pier 1 Imports, Home Depot and Petsmart. .
This side of town also
includes a variety of recreational options. The Harris YMCA, near SouthPark, and
the Siskey YMCA in Matthews are family favorites. The newest members are the
Ballantyne (adults only) YMCA and the Morrison YMCA (located a mile from the
Ballantyne branch). They all feature huge fitness
centers, all but Ballantyne feature special programs for children, playing fields and water parks. The
Mecklenburg Aquatic Club on
Providence Road is another option for swimming,
offering excellent lessons and team competition.
Charlotte Park and
Recreation Department operates two greenways in south Charlotte. The McMullen and Lower McAlpine
Creek greenways offer 4.9 miles of trails.
McAlpine Creek Greenway,
Charlotte’s oldest, has 8.9 miles of trails that are being upgraded and
refurbished.
The Park and Recreation Department is currently planning the Little
Sugar Creek Greenway, which will eventually traverse 15 miles through the heart
of Charlotte from Cordelia Park
in north Charlotte
to the N.C./S.C. state line. Sections of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway have
already been constructed, and the entire 15-mile trek will be completed within
the next decade.
In addition to the
greenways, there are several county parks that south Charlotte residents enjoy. Park Road Park has several tennis courts,
basketball courts, playground equipment, baseball fields and a 5-acre lake. It’s
a popular place for group outings. McAlpine Creek
Park on Monroe Road also has
a lake, walking and biking trails, and Ray’s Fetching Meadow, an off-leash dog
park that was recently refurbished. Col. Francis Beatty Park on Weddington Road
features a 20-acre lake, mountain biking trails and athletic facilities.
The picture (to the right) is a new event called Bark in the Park. Hundreds of dog owners
showed up for this event! More dogs at this party, then you could shake a stick
at!
As is true throughout the Charlotte region, south Charlotte has something to offer for everyone
when it comes to places of worship. You don’t have to live here long to hear
about Calvary Church (pictured below left) on Pineville-Matthews Road at Rea Road. Its
soaring glass windows and pink stucco exterior are visible from miles away due
to its hilltop setting. In contrast to this modern church is the centuries-old
Providence Presbyterian Church south of I-485, whose historic cemetery has
caused new roads to be rerouted.
South
Charlotte is also home to Shalom Park
on Providence Road,
the center of Charlotte’s
Jewish community. It includes Temple Beth El, a mainstream Reform synagogue;
Temple Israel, a Conservative Jewish congregation and Charlotte’s oldest
synagogue; and many Jewish organizations, including the Carolina Agency for
Jewish Education and the Jewish Community Center.
South Charlotte
is also served by branches of the city’s largest hospitals on either end of Pineville-Matthews Road.
Carolinas Healthcare System’s CMC-Pineville is at the western end and is
surrounded by numerous satellite offices of Charlotte medical clinics. To the east is
Presbyterian Hospital Matthews.
You’ll
find many of Charlotte’s
private schools in the southern part of town. There are a number of options,
including Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin,
Providence
Day School,
Charlotte
Catholic High
School and
Charlotte
Christian
School. The public schools, in this area, tend
to pull in some of the highest scores in the region.
Pineville,
Mecklenburg’s smallest town with just over 4,000 residents, is a
study in contrasts. Like many other towns, Pineville has seen its borders
practically evaporate as it blends with
Charlotte’s southern edge.Initially settled at the
junction of Indian trading paths, it wasn’t until the railroad came to town in
1852 that settlers chose the name Pineville for identification at the depot. The
town is the birthplace of James K. Polk, 11th president of the United States.
Today, farmhouse replicas and a museum mark the spot where the Polk family
lived.
Pineville is full of
charm and vision. The town has done a wonderful job preserving its historic
downtown, while embracing growth in the surrounding areas. Although it is best
known for the dozens of antique shops that line
Main Street, Pineville has also seen a boom in
commercial development over the past few years. It is home to several hotels and
many of the Charlotte
region’s major shopping centers. Pineville, is just minutes from the South
Carolina border.
Carolina
Place,
a two-story mall, is anchored by Macy's, Dillards, Belk, JCPenney, Sears and includes
more than 140 specialty shops. Behind the mall, on Carolina Place Parkway, lies
Furniture Row –a one day run to find all the furniture for your new home in
Charlotte-
this street offers an impressive array of more than a dozen furniture stores
including Ethan Allen, Boyles, Thomasville, Storehouse
Furniture and La-Z-Boy. Nearby Sam's Club, BJ's and Costco's are available
for your bulk shopping needs.
Across the street from
Carolina Place Mall, The Centrum, anchored by Home Depot and Kmart, offers a
variety of shopping options including Pier One, TJ MAX and Steinmart. Over on
South Boulevard at I-485, Carolina Pavilion features
1 million square feet of stores including Target, Old Navy and CompUSA, as well
as restaurants and a 22-screen movie theater. These are across the street
from the Lynx train line.
For your time away from
these shopping emporia, try out one of Pineville’s parks or walking trails. For
walking or biking, head to McMullen Creek and Lower McAlpine Creek greenways off
N.C. 51. The
Little Sugar Creek Greenway – a 15-mile trail connecting
North Charlotte to Pineville – is currently under construction,
though parts of it are completed. The entire trail is expected to be completed
within the next decade. Together, the greenways offer 4 miles of trails and a boardwalk with a
wetland observation deck. Expansion of our greenway continues around the
city. Beautiful arched wooden bridges cross over small streams, lakes for casual
fishing, dog parks, and soccer fields can be found along our greenway
systems...all under a canopy of trees!
Pineville’s Parks and
Recreation Department offers numerous activities. The Belle Johnston
Community Center features
racquetball, basketball courts, a walking track and craft classes. Just beyond
the shops of Main St.
is the recently renovated Jack
D. Hughes
Memorial Park where you
will often find baseball or softball games under way. Pineville Lake
Park has picnic
facilities, tennis courts, fishing and a performance stage that features movies
on Friday nights, concerts and other entertainment.
New residential
development is popping up everywhere, including Bridlestone off Lancaster
Highway and Traditions, which offers bungalow-style homes near downtown
Pineville. Quite a few active age communities (over 55) are in this area. The
draw, is a a
thriving medical community nearby at the Pineville location of Carolinas
Healthcare System which is a major medical facility that has generated
development in its immediate vicinity. Several medical practices that previously
operated only in town now have branches along
Park Road
to serve residents of Pineville and south Charlotte. Nearby Carolina Mall is
conveniently located for those that enjoy doing 'mall walking' during the year.
